The Modern Night Watch: Reimagining Rembrandt A Merseyside Perspective on Youth
Project type
Portraits
Date
July 2024
Location
Merseyside
In this reimagining of Rembrandt's classic, "The Night Watch," I sought to capture the essence of youth in Merseyside, where young people are often unfairly labelled as "rats" and "scallies." This project shines a light on the limited opportunities and harsh judgments faced by our youth, who are frequently viewed with suspicion when they gather in groups. While acknowledging the issues of anti-social behaviour and gang crime, I aimed to offer a fresh perspective inspired by the Dutch masters. This artwork invites viewers to consider how Rembrandt might depict these young individuals if he were alive today, blending historical artistry with contemporary social commentary.
